The Game Psygnosis-Lander is called as such by the community to distingish itself from the ancient 2D game that inspired it, that ancient game was also called Lander. Psygnosis-Lander - in it's 3Dness - is a completely different game, so you really don't want someone accidentally thinking you are talking about some crusty old atari game by accident. Psygnosis is the Company who made Lander, the game was released in 1999. The Manchester branch of Psygnosis was disolved after (or perhaps even during, handing it over to the other Psygnosis branch/s) they released Lander, and the greater Psygnosis now company no longer exists either as it was bought out by Sony - you likely will figure this out yourself if have ever try to goto www.psygnosis.com. One is to assume Psygnosis was incorporated into the massive collective that now creates playstation games. Psygnosis created a lot of famous games during their very long history, a lot of them because of their interesting and original gameplay. Some Psygnosis games i remember fondly include Lemmings, Destruction Derby, G-Police, Wipeout, and Lander.
Because of the strangely alluring complexity of Psygnosis-Lander, it can attract people from other difficultly rewarding games. For example, most people i've met who have enjoyed Lander have also played and enjoyed the Descent series of games. The games share a challenging component of complex 3D movement within enclosed spaces and therefore all require a significant amount of spacial awareness in the player.
Lander's control scheme is very similar to how actual lunar landers are controlled. If you look closely while playing you will notice that the Landers' RCS system works exactly as it would in reallife. The RCS rockets fire as according to Newton's 3rd law in action.
Because of the difficulty of Lander, it was not always well received in reviews. It is a hard game to master, a lot of players give up early - frustrated. So because of this it faded into somewhat obscurity. Lander can be played multiplayer but because of it's difficulty added to it's obscurity: it's hard to find people who are practiced in playing it - finding challenging opponents can be difficult. I've begun to try to track down people who play this game, so that i may make a list to make the organisation of multiplayer games easier. And as always, i still when i can try to encourage new people to try this game.
